How to Install a Fuel Tank in a Ford TaurusInstalling a fuel tank into a 1988-1992 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable has its share of challenges, but with a little knowledge and patience, it's possible. Pay close attention to your Taurus' fuel tank and watch for any signs of wear and tear. You don't want to unnecessarily replace your fuel tank, but when the time is right, you can do it yourself. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Gas container Fuel tank Torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Empty the remaining fuel out of the fuel tank before starting. Remove the filler pipe, vent hose clamps and the bolt straps from the rear of the tank, which is located under the car in the rear trunk middle. Disconnect the tank's electrical connector from the fuel pump. Place the empty fuel tank aside where it won't interfere with your work. 2 Put the replacement fuel tank in place under the car. Start connecting the fuel lines and electrical connector to keep the new fuel tank in place. 3 Wrap the fuel tank straps tightly around the tank. Push the fuel tank forward as much as possible. Use a torque wrench to screw in the retaining bolts to 21 lbs. Make sure the bolts are completely secure before continuing. 4 Connect the fuel filler hoses and the clamps. Get your gas container and pour the contents slowly back into the tank. Fill the fuel tank only halfway in case you need to empty it again for any reason. 5 Inspect the car for any leaks or loosely connected wiring. Put back the negative battery cable to get your Taurus driving ready. Get in your car and drive around the block to see if the engine is running smoothly before planning longer trips. Tips & Warnings Make sure your new fuel tank has a heat shield so that you can secure the straps correctly on the new tank. Don't panic if your siphon hose gets blocked while you're inserting it into your old fuel tank. Try inserting the hose at different angles or find a smaller hose to fit the Taurus' fuel tank. GMC . How to Install a Fuel Tank in a Dodge CaravanSince its 1984 inception, the Dodge Caravan has changed to fit what drivers want in a minivan. Once you learn to install a fuel tank in your 1991 to 2008 Caravan model, you can do it like a pro. These instructions also apply to all models of Plymouth Voyager, Chrysler Town & Country as well as the Dodge Caravan. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Siphon hose Fuel container Floor jack Wooden board Torque wrench Screwdriver Safety glasses Latex gloves Fire extinguisher TowelsSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Take off the fuel tank filler cap and unplug the negative battery cable from the car battery. Remove the drain tube rubber cap on the left side of the trunk to gain access to the fuel tank. Put a siphon hose inside the fuel tank to empty the contents into a fuel container. 2 Loosen the filler tube screws on the inner and outer panel of the fuel tank. Unplug all fuel lines and wiring on the fuel tank. Place a floor jack underneath the fuel tank with a wooden board underneath for support. Take off the tank strap bolts with a torque wrench. Remove the straps and take off additional hoses before lowering the fuel tank to the ground. 3 Get a replacement fuel tank if the original tank has too many cracks or too much damage from any auto supply store. Raise the new plastic fuel tank to the left side of the trunk with your floor jack. Reconnect the vapor separator rollover valve hose to the fuel tank top. Cover the bottom of the fuel tank with the insulator pad to protect the tank from damage. 4 Put the filler tube back into the fuel tank top. Tie the fuel tank straps around each end of the fuel tank. Tighten the straps bolts back into each strap with the torque wrench. Reconnect all wiring and fuel lines back into your fuel tank. Make sure all wiring is firmly connected in the fuel tank before going further. 5 Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws on the filler tube on the inner and outer fuel tank panel. Empty the contents of the fuel container back into the fuel tank. Put in the drain tube rubber cap back on the fuel tank. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the car battery. Close the fuel tank with the fuel tank filler cap. 6 Check your Caravan for loose wiring or any possible fuel leaks. Put a towel underneath to catch any fuel leaks. If there are no leaks, let your engine run for a few minutes to make sure it's working. Take your car for a drive once you confirm everything is working. Tips & Warnings Keep your workplace and yourself safe. Wear safety glasses and latex gloves to cover your eyes and hands from getting fuel on them. Get a fire extinguisher to use in case of potential fires from erupting in or around your car. Be careful when you remove the fuel tank from your car because most Caravan fuel tanks, like on the Town & Country models, are made of plastic. Handle the tank carefully to prevent scratching it.
